power & velocity
Back to the Academy
Velocity is a product of moving freely and generating explosive force. These drills are designed to help increase your power output and feel yourself move faster. There is a big mental component to throwing as hard as you can. If you feel like you have a mental block (like worrying about being wild), head to the Mental Game section.
When working on increasing your velo, don’t worry about mechanics or location. Just be free and explode! Give your body time to get used to the faster speed as well - your body still knows how to pitch, it just needs to figure out how to do it at a faster speed.
Walkthroughs are a staple drill for working timing, leg drive, rhythm, or just for your warmup progression. Make sure you keep your mechanics, stay together, stay loose, and finish straight!
Now that you’ve got the load down, we want to make sure you’re getting the most out of your push off. Your push off will make or break your pitch, so we it's important to break it down and talk about exactly what we want to see, as well as give you some tips to improve it.
Struggling to be push off with speed? Can’t find triple extension? Trying to kick out instead of drive? Have a mental block of starting fast? Using a BOSU Ball to push off is a great way to address those issues and more. Plus, it’s just plain fun!
Looking to build more power and strength in your push off? Look no further! The lunge lunge drill is designed to build strength, develop better drive from your push off leg, and help you feel the correct position to push off from.
Skipping is a great way to work on push off, especially when you combine it with pitching! It’s powerful, teaches coordination, helps you feel light on your feet, and most importantly, it’s FUN!
Even if you don’t use it daily, it’s a great way to help you feel light or reset on an off day.
The hopping drill is great if you’re looking for a drill that helps with push off, getting extension, and staying light on your feet. It’s also very fun to do, and is highly requested by our pitchers!
The running pitch is a great drill to work on velocity and getting out of your head! There is a mental side of throwing hard, and this drill allows you to get over that mental block and let it go!

Unleash your velocity with this drill! It’s great for overcoming the mental block of throwing hard. It helps you to let go, focus on the feel of your body, and to take away the pressure of throwing the “perfect pitch” (which doesn’t exist by the way).
