pitching journal
Back to the Academy
Every pitcher’s most valuable tool! We’ve broken down the journaling process into the seven specific sections that helped us the most during our careers. Use these categories to organize your training, refine your mental game, track your progress, and more.
First section of the pitching journal is all about mentality! This practice helps you to really know what you’re thinking so you can create a better routine and stay present more.
We can’t emphasize enough how important your routine is! This video covers how journaling can help you be intentional with developing and executing your routine and your pitch.
Pitching is a series of constant adjustments, and it’s impossible to keep track of all of them! Your journal can catalog all your mechanical cues and the correct adjustments for when things are feeling off, taking the guess work out of it.
We all move differently, and no one moves perfectly (in a biomechanics sense). Hopefully you’re not in Nicole’s situation where she was in pain, but it’s still very important to track movement inefficiencies as well as exercises, activations, and routines you need to do to move and play at your best.
One of the most beneficial things you can do as a pitcher is to game plan and learn to read hitters and situations. There’s WAY too much that goes into that to rely on your memory, it’s absolutely necessary to write all this stuff down!
Journals are traditionally used for reflection, and we want to include that in ours as well! We learn a lot from talking about how we feel in a game, or even after a hard practice which is GREAT for being able to go back to figure out the best way for you to get back on track in the middle of an inning!

Journaling is the best tool a pitcher (or any softball player) to use on a daily basis. Memory is not reliable, so writing it down is invaluable.
